ABSTRACT

Thus, it is necessary to understand the associations between mental disorders, especially stress, according to the characteristics of teaching work. OBJECTIVES: To analyze some associations between job characteristics and work-related stress in basic education teachers in Florianópolis, SC. METHODS: We investigated the work-related stress, according to the Demand-Control Theory, 349 basic education teachers, the state and municipal basic education of Florianópolis - SC. RESULTS/DISCUSSION: The majority of teachers rated their work as passive work (33%) or high strain job (29%). Only 13% of teachers rated their work as active. The perception of demand at work was correlated with higher time teaching (p=0.011) and higher weekly workload (p<0.001). Teachers with 40 or more hours per week had greater perception of high strain job in the assessment of work-related stress. Moreover, effective teachers showed higher prevalence of work high strain job (p=0.034). No association was observed between the work related to gender, age, function and perform other paid work in management positions/supervisory stress. CONCLUSIONS: Unlike to the literature discussed the experience in teaching was not associated with lower stress indicators. In addition, the decrease in weekly workload is recommended for teachers to have more positive relationships between demand and control in teaching perception measure.
